Description
The Cherry Plum Tree (Prunus cerasifera) is a small tree with white flowers in spring and, when mature, produces red / yellow fruit in the summer. Characteristics
Cherry Plum leaves are 3 - 7 cm long, elliptical with a pointed tip and blunt-toothed margins. The upper side is glossy and young leaves have a hairy mid-rib on the underside.
On mature trees white blossom open just before, or at the same time as, the leaves. The fruit is round 2 - 2.5 cm across and yellow or red. Uses
Cherry Plums are often planted as hedgerow plants.
When mature it develops a twiggy, wild looking canopy that is good for blocking sight and tends to attract nesting birds.
It is a good source of nectar for bees and other insects. The fruits can be used to make jams, wines or liqueurs. It is suitable in coastal areas and does well in exposed / windy conditions.
